Do You Dream in Internet? Don’t Freak Out

Almost every night, I sit in bed and stare at my phone. Then I fall asleep and dream about the internet. I send friends imaginary iMessages and hear the woo-Oop sound and then the ding when they reply. I scroll through nonsensical tweets and read Slack messages from my boss. Since I bought my first smartphone in 2008, the internet has oozed its way into the subterranean parts of my consciousness. Maybe it feels like the same thing has happened to you too.

Plenty of research has looked at how smartphones and social media sites affect our habits, our relationships, our brains, and attention spans. There are also plenty of studies documenting how excessive use of these new technologies may lead to poorer sleep. But there’s little research on how our constantly internet-connected lives may alter the content and quality of our dreams.

That’s partially due to the fact that studying the phenomenon of dreaming is incredibly difficult. Researchers are almost always forced [...]  read more

World’s tiniest ‘computer’ makes a grain of rice seem massive

The size limitations forced researchers to get creative to reduce the effect of light. They switched from diodes to switched capacitors, and had to fight the relative increase in electrical noise that comes from running on a device that uses so little power.

The result is a sensor that can measure changes in extremely small regions, like a group of cells in your body. Scientists have suspected that tumors are slightly hotter than healthy tissue, but it’s been difficult to verify this until now. The minuscule device could both check this claim and, if it proves true, gauge the effectiveness of cancer treatments. The team also envisions this helping to diagnose glaucoma from inside the eye, monitor biochemical processes and even study tiny snails.

Why the air quotes around computer, then? The tiny size is leading the University to question what a computer is. This does have a full-fledged processor (based on an ARM Cortex-M0+ design), but it loses all data when it loses power, just [...]  read more

Huawei Band 3 Pro: what we want to see

Great battery life and a fairly low price, combined with an assortment of features you’d expect to pay more for, meant the Huawei Band 2 Pro was a strong fitness band, albeit one with plenty of faults.

That’s why we’re hoping there will be a Huawei Band 3 Pro, and also hoping that Huawei will learn from the current band and fix the main issues it faced.

At the end of this article you’ll find the main improvements we’d like to see, but before that here’s everything we know or suspect about the Huawei Band 3 Pro so far.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? The next Huawei fitness band
  • When is it out? Unknown, but maybe late 2018
  • What will it cost? Probably at least $69.99 / £79.99 (around AU$140)

Huawei Band 3 Pro release date and price

There’s no news on when the Huawei Band 3 Pro might launch, but the Huawei Band 2 Pro was announced in July 2017, which is almost a year ago, so there’s a chance we’ll see it soon.

Given that we’ve not heard anything about it yet July might be unlikely, but a little later, perhaps at IFA 2018 (which takes place from 31 August – 5 September), is very possible.

As for the price, we’re guessing there too for now, but the Huawei Band 2 Pro launched for $69.99 [...]  read more

We’re starting to get close to July 4th, which makes it an oddly fruitful weekend for tech deals. There are still a few E3 Game and Console Deals going on, and Best Buy’s Massive Apple Sale is still happening. Microsoft has already tried to get a head start on competitors with an early Microsoft Store Independence Day Sale, with discounts on Surfaces, Xboxes, and other Microsoft products.

Deals of the Weekend

Moto Z3 Play with Battery Pack for $450 (Will be $500)

The Motorola Moto Z3 Play hits shelves on June 29, but if you preorder it on Amazon, you can get $50 off. We haven’t fully reviewed it yet, but given the track record of this line and what we do know about it, it’s likely a very good bargain for $450. It comes universally unlocked, so it works with every wireless carrier, and an extra Moto Mod battery pack that magnetically snaps onto the back of the phone is included in the box .

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Blu-Ray for $23 (Was $40)
