Nvidia may be developing its own smart home device with hologram tech

The smart home seems to be the space every major tech company wants to occupy, and it appears that Nvidia may be next in line. Evidence of a smart speaker-like device with holographic capabilities from Nvidia was spotted by an anonymous source for Wccftech.

The source spotted and took a photo of a commuter on a Caltrain in California working on a slideshow slide. The slide depicts a piece of hardware and included deadlines for developers to submit code for skills for the launch of “Project R.O.N.”

While Nvidia’s brand isn’t readily apparent on the slide, the aesthetic follows Nvidia’s art style, the and source noted the commuter was wearing an NV badge.

Not implausible for an AI powerhouse

While Nvidia hasn’t announced a standalone smart home device, it wouldn’t be a stretch for the company to give it a shot. With the Nvidia Shield TV, it already has an entrance into smart home, but leverages Google Assistant to control IoT devices.

So, Nvidia already has a grasp on how to [...]  read more

Lyft’s IPO Heralds a Wave of Gig-Economy Offerings

This article has been updated to reflect the completion of Lyft’s initial public offering.

It’s happening. Shares of Lyft, the first big initial public offering of the gig economy era, started trading on Friday. The company priced its shares at $72 and quickly jumped as high as $87.24. By market’s close, though, the stock had retreated to $78.29, a gain of 8.7 percent from the IPO price. That gives Lyft a $26.4 billion market cap, larger than many legacy transportation companies, like United and American Airlines, Hertz, and Avis.

On one hand, the market’s enthusiasm for the Lyft IPO (which was reportedly oversubscribed) is good tidings for a spate of other tech IPOs on the horizon, including Uber, Airbnb, and Pinterest. Uber, Lyft’s main rival, was last valued in an August 2018 private financing round at $76 billion, and might seek a $120 billion valuation when it files for IPO. The larger ride-hailing company has reportedly filed its initial paperwork to go public.

Lyft closes up 9% on first day of trading

Pink confetti fell from the ceiling Friday as Lyft co-founders Logan Green and John Zimmer celebrated their company’s IPO. The stock offering was a bonafide success, with shares selling for $87.24 apiece Friday morning — 21 percent higher than Lyft’s initial $72 share price — and closing at $78.29 per share.

Lyft raised roughly $2.3 billion Thursday evening, hours before ringing the opening bell of the Nasdaq on Friday around noon Pacific. The IPO gave Lyft an initial market cap of about $24 billion, representing an 11x revenue multiple and a 1.6x step-up from its most recent private valuation of $15.1 billion.

On Bloomberg TV, Lyft’s co-founders discussed the company’s long-term prospects, including international growth, autonomous vehicle plans, the future of car ownership and insurance.

“We are confident that the business will be very profitable,” Green told Emily Chang. “We are making tremendous progress going after this once-in-a-generation shift where [...]  read more

‘Call of Duty’ swatter to serve 20 years in prison

After being given an address by the gamer he was in an argument with, Shane Gaskill, Barriss called the Wichita police posing as his rival. He told the dispatcher that he murdered his father and was holding the rest of his family hostage. A SWAT team showed up at the address provided to him by Gaskill, which was actually the residence of 28-year-old Andrew Finch. The officer involved in the fatal shooting wasn’t criminally charged, though Finch’s family has sued the city over the incident.

Barriss, now 26, was arrested shortly after the fatal shooting and pleaded guilty to 51 total charges late last year, stemming primarily from numerous false reports he made to emergency services. He was also found to have placed bomb threats to the Dallas Convention Center, a Florida high school and the Federal Communications [...]  read more

Como, cade mentre fa parkour sul tetto di un capannone: 16enne in pericolo di vita

Un ragazzino di 16 anni è precipitato dal tetto di un capannone a Mariano Comense, nel Comasco. È stato trasportato all’ospedale Sant’Anna in elicottero e sarebbe in condizioni molto gravi.

AirPower canceled: Apple says wireless charging mat wasn’t up to standards

We’ve been checking for the Apple AirPower release date every day, but there’s no need to do that anymore, as Apple has canceled the project altogether.

AirPower, the wireless charging mat Apple revealed a year and a half ago, first showed up at its iPhone X launch event. That was September 12, 2017, or 563 days ago.

It promised to Qi charge three devices at once anywhere you laid them down on the mat. So you could simply drop your iPhone XS Max, AirPods 2019 and Apple Watch 4 onto the mat and juice them up without plugging in any cables.

However, over the last 18 months, we haven’t heard much about the AirPower mat, except for a smattering of rumors that the company was having trouble with quality control. In the meantime, other companies like Belkin and Samsung announced wireless chargers that could charge two devices at once.

Today, Apple spoke up about its long-delayed AirPower in an email statement sent to TechRadar and other media outlets:

“After much effort, we’ve [...]  read more
