This drone swarm spray painted a jumbo-size graffiti mural

It’s Friday, so why not watch some good old-fashioned drone-powered graffiti? A design firm in Italy has put together a lovely little show that collected sketches from the art community and put them all together in a giant mural, painted over 12 hours by a team of drones.

We’ve seen spray-painting drones before, of course, but this is far better than the crude vandalism of a fashion billboard or even Disney’s more structured wall drawings. These drones actually put together something worth looking at!

The Urban Flying Opera project was curated by Carlo Ratti Associati, which collected some 1,200 small illustrations via an app, selecting 100 to assemble into a single mural. The line drawings were then loaded into a central control computer and painting instructions relayed to a set of four drones equipped with paint cans, which worked over a 12-hour period to put the whole thing together.

Sikorsky’s S-97 Raider Helicopter Is a Pirouetting Speedster

Even at seven in the morning, the south Florida heat and humidity is stifling. It steams up eyeglasses and feels like an iron on your skin. An alligator lurks in a stagnant pond water between the taxiway and the runway. Perhaps a spy sent by Bell, Sikorsky’s chief competitor for the contract to build the Department of Defense’s next generation of vertical-lift aircraft.

But any resentment about Sikorsky’s decision to test its radical new S-97 Raider prototype at its facility in West Palm Beach vanishes as the helicopter’s 2,600 horsepower turbine engine spooled up on the runway and the dual, counterrotating rotors above the fuselage start spinning, out-blowing any ocean breeze.

Sikorsky touts the Raider, with its so-called compound design, including stacked (or “coaxial”) rotors and a rear-facing propeller in place of the familiar side-facing tail rotor, as fast, quiet, and highly maneuverable. The Lockheed Martin-owned defense firm is pitching it as a replacement [...]  read more

Best Linux laptops of 2019: the top open-source notebooks

For some people, going with the best Linux laptops is the way to go, contrary to popular opinion that Microsoft’s Windows and Apple’s macOS are the only options for a notebook operating system. With this guide, we’re going to dive into the best laptops that are specifically built for the open-source operating system.

There aren’t any mainstream notebook vendors, beyond Dell at least, that offer Linux as a base OS option on a new laptop. This leaves us with other smaller manufacturers, which can carve out a niche for themselves with the best Linux laptops.

Plus, you can still install Linux on pretty much any laptop, even though some manufacturers lock down their products, making installing Linux kind of a pain.

We picked out five of the best Linux laptops on the market right now, all of which have been fine-tuned to run some of the best Linux distros (like Ubuntu, for instance). That means they’re guaranteed run the open-source OS out of the box without any tinkering.

‘Apollo: Missions to the Moon’ brings the history of space exploration to life

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing, National Geographic has plans for an entire Space Week of programming, kicking off Sunday night with the premiere of a new documentary called “Apollo: Missions to the Moon.”

It’s a story that’s been told many times, including in last year’s Neil Armstrong biopic “First Man.” And of course, there’s a whole slate of new documentaries and specials airing in the next few weeks — something that “Apollo: Missions to the Moon” director Tom Jennings acknowledged with a rueful laugh when we spoke on the phone.

But Jennings brought his distinctive approach to the project, one that he’s employed in previous documentaries like “Challenger Disaster: Lost Tapes” and “Diana: In Her Own Words.” The idea is to rely entirely on archival audio, video and photos, so that viewers can experience the story in the present tense, rather than hearing about it from talking heads 50 years later.

In this case, National [...]  read more

‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’: 5 Comics That Help Explain the Ending

Spider-Man: Far From Home landed in theaters this week and brought with it a look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s post-Avengers: Endgame present and its future. (Those post-credits scenes were a lot, amirite?) But the movie is just the beginning. To truly know what might be in store, you have to dive into the comic book source material. Here are the five comics you should read after watching Spider-Man: Far From Home.

The Amazing Spider-Man #198-200

While Mysterio’s scheme in Far From Home is actually kind of wonderful, it’s still not his best—or, arguably, most arcane—plot. That would be the plan he’s working his way through in this 1979 three-parter, in which he tries to break Peter Parker’s sanity in order to discover literal buried treasure that may or many not exist underneath Aunt May’s house. Oh, and Aunt [...]  read more

Price drops could be coming to AMD Navi graphics cards already

AMD Navi graphics cards aren’t even out yet, but thanks to pressure from the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2060 Super, AMD is rumored to drop prices on the Radeon RX 5700 XT and RX 5700.

Right out of the gate, when the AMD Radeon RX 5700 series graphics cards were revealed back at E3 2019, they were targeting the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 and RTX 2060.

But, now that the Super cards have effectively lowered the price of entry to the RTX family, AMD may be planning to cut prices of the RX 5700 XT and RX 5700 to $399 (about £315, AU$580) and $349 (about £275, AU$500), respectively, according to a report from VideoCardz.

We don’t have any concrete performance information for the Navi cards, but we do know that the Nvidia RTX Super cards are noticeably more powerful than their non-super counterparts. It really does seem like Nvidia held these Super cards back to weaken the appeal of Navi, releasing two days later.

If AMD Navi graphics cards like the Radeon [...]  read more
