The shift to electric vehicles propels a strike against GM
As the auto industry rolls into the all-electric future, workers face a problem: While the electric car may be great for the planet and glorious for drivers, it’s no good for jobs. EVs are easier and cheaper to make and have fewer parts, meaning it takes fewer hours to build them. Their reliability is even problematic for dealerships whose profits depend on servicing the cars. But now GM must balance its electric future with its current employees after 46,000 workers walked off 33 General Motors sites on Sunday, demanding a new contract that includes more jobs, higher pay, and a greater share of GM profits.
A password-exposing bug was purged from LastPass
Google’s Project Zero discovered a vulnerability in the widely used password manager LastPass that made it possible for websites to steal credentials for the last account the user logged into using the Chrome or Opera extension. A patch has since been issued, so make sure you have the latest version, and also consider using multifactor authentication whenever possible.
Fast Fact: $130,000
That’s how much money the Hack the Air Force initiative, a bug bounty that sprung from a partnership between HackerOne and the Pentagon’s Defense Digital Service, paid out to hackers who collectively found more than 120 vulnerabilities in their services. Now they’re offering to let hackers take a crack at an orbiting satellite at next year’s Defcon security conference.
