YouTube TV gifts free Showtime subscriptions to ‘longtime friends’

Showtime has found it easier to coax users into paying for its service through streaming services than their cable bill. Last year, channel president David Nevins said that most of its growth — it has 25.5 million subscribers — comes from cord cutters and other online-only users. Part of that was because you couldn’t, like HBO, buy the channel without also picking up a premium subscription for other offerings.

Not only is the free teaser a good way of hooking cord cutters and cord nevers into Showtime’s world, it’s good for YouTube, too. The Google-owned video site is going through some stuff right now, including accusations that it is turning a blind eye to homophobia and racism on its site. Not to mention the discovery of what was described as a “soft-core pedophilia ring” that flourished inside its comments.

In trying to clear “confusion” over anti-harassment policy, YouTube creates more confusion

After a series of tweets that made it seem as if YouTube was contradicting its own anti-harassment policies, the video platform published a blog post in an attempt to clarify its stance. YouTube is currently under fire for not taking earlier, more decisive actions against conservative commentator Steven Crowder after he made homophobic and racist comments about Vox reporter Carlos Maza in multiple videos. The platform eventually demonetized Crowder’s channel, which currently has more than 3.8 million subscribers, but then stated it would allow [...]  read more

YouTuber gets 15 month prison sentence, $22,000 fine for toothpaste-filled Oreos

YouTube star Kanghua Ren was just handed a 15 month prison sentence and 20,000 euro ($22,300) fine for a January 2017 video.

The video, which generated widespread outrage online, found Ren giving a homeless man in Barcelona repackaged Oreo cookies filled with toothpaste.

“Maybe I’ve gone a bit far, but look at the positive side: This will help him clean his teeth,” the China-born YouTuber (then 19) known as ReSet said in the video. “I think he hasn’t cleaned them since he became poor.”

The 52-year-old man vomited after ingesting the cookies, later telling a paper that he had, “never been treated so poorly while living on the street.”

Ren was given the sentence on Friday, though The New York Times notes that he’ll likely not actually serve any time, given how nonviolent crimes are generally treated in Spanish court. In addition, his YouTube channel and various social media counts [...]  read more
